I tried food from The Smoking Goat and it blew my mind – Christian Brayford

You can just about go anywhere for a burger and it would be the same.

The simple concept of a burger in a bun, slabbed with some cheese and salad has been a winning combination for many years. McDonalds, KFC, Burger King and many more have done it to varying degrees of success.

But what really inspires me is food that looks and tastes good. It’s the food that tempts you so much that you simply can’t say no.

I was trying to find my next food challenge that would be something a little different than usual. I’d be scrolling on social media when I saw one of my friends had captioned a photo ‘the only takeaway I will ever need’ along with a picture.

It was the most incredible looking food I had ever seen. The burger looked to be oozing cheese from inside the bun that looked like a volcano erupting lava – but in this case it was cheese thankfully.

There was none of this one cheese slice nonsense. Chips were topped with mac & cheese pasta along with the creamy pasta sauce.

In most restaurants they are now referred to as loaded or dirty fries – and boy did they look dirty. God heavens did it look good.

It looked to be the best takeaway I had seen so I just had to try it. I found out it was called the Smoking Goat, on 213 Frodingham Road in Scunthorpe.

So, as most people do nowadays, I scrolled onto Deliveroo to find the Smoking Goat on there – it saved me getting the car out at least.

By looking at the menu, you can instantly tell them they specialize in one thing – burgers. They sell 10 different burgers so there is plenty of variety and scope.

For instance, there’s the Black & Blue Burger – two homemade beef patties, blue cheese, lettuce, pickle, red onion, goat sauce. All served in a toasted brioche bun. They also have a burger called the Firecracker – a standard goat burger topped with spicy pulled chicken that’s packed with spices and loads of flavor.

You can also choose to have loaded fries. There’s Salt & Pepper Chicken, Mac ‘N’ Cheese, and BBQ Chicken Loaded fries to choose from.

On the photos I’d seen, the chips were completely covered to an inch on one of the selected toppings above. Imagine fries served with cheese and then topped with pulled chicken?

There were also shakes on offer with flavors including Oreo, Kinder Bueno, Lotus Biscoff, Bubblegum and Salted Caramel. As a milkshake lover myself, this was just the cherry on top.

In the end, I went for the Mac ‘N’ Cheese Burger – two homemade beef patties, cheddar cheese, lettuce, pickle, red onion, goat sauce topped with homemade Mac ‘n’ Cheese and served in a brioche bun. If you order a burger, you can upgrade to loaded fries for an extra £ 2.50 which was fantastic.

So I added BBQ Chicken Loaded Fries to my meal. Being exceptionally greedy, I also went for an Oreo shake.

I’m pretty glad I never saw the calorie count of this takeaway as it would have been astronomical. The total for the takeaway was £ 17.19 without adding delivery and Deliveroo fees, which I didn’t think was too bad.

But the question is, would it have been worth it?

It didn’t take long for the delivery to arrive either. Around 30 minutes which again, isn’t bad considering the tremendous volume of orders takeaways receive these days.

So once the food had delivered from kitchen to reporter’s front room, I was gobsmacked. The food came in this little rectangular box.

At first I was dubious, but once it was opened, the takeaway box opened like a folding magical surprise with something very valuable inside.

If I could describe my face through an emoji, it would be the one where there are stars in its eyes. I certainly feel I had found a top contender.

The chips were completely covered in cheese and then topped with pulled chicken in a barbecue sauce. The burger was consumed with cheese overload including the Mac ‘N’ Cheese topper.

It looked like it had been melted to a point of absolute sublime perfection. My eyes were solely focused on thinking how I would devour such a beast.

But it was quite easy really. The taste of the burger consumed every single desire you feel when taking a bite of food that is irresistibly good.

You know when you have to close your eyes for a moment and then you make a massive grin because it’s that good? That was the feeling here.

The cheese completely covered the burger and there was none of this one slice of nonsense cheese. The brioche bun was warm, soft and added to the overall texture of the burger which made me savor every single moment I had eating this burger.

And the fries! I had never tasted anything so fantastic in my life. Cheese, fries and pulled barbecue chicken are a combination that were made to be together.

I don’t know how I managed it but the Oreo shake was equally impressive. You could actually taste the Oreo as well which made the drink even more enjoyable.

It was a thick shake as well topped with a helping of whipped cream on top. Although I didn’t need it, it was a fantastic addition to a splendid meal.

This takeaway was exceptional. I would even go as far as to say it is the ultimate cheat meal / takeaway that you need to try if you love all things burger, fries and shakes.

And it’s available right here in Scunthorpe. I think the basic pillars for a successful takeaway are founded on three important points.

The first is was the food mind blowing? Indeed it was.

The second is would you go again sooner rather than later? I’m certainly in a hurry to order another and trying to make excuses to order one over the weekend.

The third is would you recommend it to a friend / family? I’ve already called my partner, mum, dad, sister, uncle, and any other extended family in the area to give it a try because it’s that good.

I know I loved it, I know they will love it, and I hope you might give it a try too.
