FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The Franklin County Animal Shelter issued a plea to pet parents and potential adopters on Tuesday, saying that the facility is “busting at the seams” and will be forced to euthanize if they can’t find homes for enough furry friends.
According to the Franklin County Animal Shelter’s announcement from Tuesday, June 7, only two kennels are still open, causing staff to panic because this is an open admission facility for animal control and the county.
In other words, the shelter cannot refuse any dog or cat within the Franklin County community, so if the facility runs out of room for incoming animals, it has to euthanize other pets for the sake of space, according to officials.
Amid this urgent need to find new families for furry friends, the Franklin County Animal Shelter says the adoption fees for most of the dogs have been sponsored while others will have the “urgent special” for their adoption fee, which is $ 20 with approved applications.
If the animals are not spayed / neutered, the shelter says you will need to have that done within 30 days of adoption.
In addition to the wonderful dogs available for adoption – such as the ones photographed below – the Franklin County Animal Shelter says there are many more on stray hold for various reasons.

‘Nixie,’ a 3-year-old spayed female dog, is available for adoption as of June 7, 2022. According to the Franklin County Animal Shelter, “She will do best in a home with no small children or dogs! She does require a meet and greet with other dogs but usually does well with the larger ones. She is a very loud player and she can become ‘mouthy’ but she does not bite. We are working with her on that because we know that can be scary for some. She is an amazing girl that does like to cuddle but also enjoys her play time, especially with her ball. Just look at that face, what fun she is going to be this summer !!! Nixie has been sponsored! ” (Photo courtesy: Franklin County Animal Shelter)
‘Kai,’ a 2-year-old husky male, was found as a stray and nobody has claimed him as of June 7, 2022. According to the Franklin County Animal Shelter, “He has the normal husky energy and personality. He has the most beautiful eyes and has been ok with other dogs, but do require a meet and greet with him. We ask for no small children. He walks well on leash and keeps a clean kennel. He’s a sweet boy that we know the right family will come for him. ” (Photo courtesy: Franklin County Animal Shelter)
‘Watson,’ a 3-year-old neutered male dog, is the shelter’s longest resident and available for adoption as of June 7, 2022. According to the Franklin County Animal Shelter, “He is very timid at first and truly may require that you come visit once or twice before taking him home. Once he knows you, he is the most lovable dog you’ll ever meet. Sometimes we just sit in his kennel and he likes to hold our hands! Yes, he knows shake and also loves chest scratches. He has tested well with cats, but we prefer a meet and greet with submissive dogs, no dominant dogs please. We also ask for no small children. ” (Photo courtesy: Franklin County Animal Shelter)
